On Thursday, May 13th, 2010, the teams get set for Free Practice, the first session of each Grand Prix. Normally, Friday is the day of Free Practice, and this is the case everywhere but Monte Carlo. Instead, the teams participate in Free Practice on Thursday, leaving Friday as a market day. Watch F1 Monaco Grand Prix Live Online at www.watch-live-formula1.com. Besides winning the F1 World Championship, the other crown jewel for a driver is to be victorious on the streets of Monaco. Button, who took the title last year, also won the Monaco Grand Prix. In 2010, Button is the only man with two races wins in Formula One, coming victorious in Australia and China. The other race winners this season are: Fernando Alonso in Bahrain, Sebastian Vettel in Malaysia, and Mark Webber in Spain.
After a disappointing start to the season, Michael Schumacher handedly beat his teammate, Nico Rosberg, who until Sunday had out-qualified and beaten his teammate in the first four races; Rosberg still leads Schumacher in points 50 to 22.
Monaco is a race that a handful of men have dominated. Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher have each won the race five different times; the record of six Monaco Grand Prix wins is held by the late Ayrton Senna. Michael Schumacher, who hasn’t won the race since 2001, is perhaps remembered more for his “mistake” in qualifying 2006 than any of his race wins.
2010 has been a very exciting season thus far, with the new points system adding to the suspense; since 2004 the points system had been: 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1; in 2010, the points system is 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1.
The Driver’s Championship is currently led by last year’s champion, Jenson Button. Button has 70 pts. In second place is Fernando Alonso with 67 points. Third and fourth place are taken by the Red Bull-Renault teammates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber with 60 and 53 points respectively. Fifth is Nico Rosberg with 50 points.
The Constructor’s Championship is equally tight. McLaren-Mercedes leads the championship with 119 points. Close behind in second is Ferrari with 116 points. Third place is held by Red Bull Racing with 113 points. Further behind in fourth place is Mercedes with 72 points.
The weather for the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco looks clear, though in the past, the race has had surprise pop-up rain showers. Truth be told, the streets of Monaco do not need rain for a chaotic race; the tight, twisting circuit is challenging enough to push even the best Formula One drivers. Whatever the weather, the Monaco Grand Prix will be an interesting test for the drivers and a great treat for the fans.
