The second round of the 2010 Formula 1 season takes place at the picturesque Albert Park circuit in Melbourne. Ferrari emerged as the team to beat, after Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa scored a 1-2 in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel had looked a likely winner until his Red Bull developed a problem, and the young German will be looking to make amends in the Australian Grand Prix on March 28th. The Albert Park circuit in Melbourne has hosted the Australian Grand Prix since 1996, when it replaced Adelaide on the F1 calendar. The track is a favourite of many drivers, with overtaking opportunities and some challenging high speed corners.

Michael Schumacher has won four times around Albert Park, while no other current Formula 1 driver has triumphed more than once. Ferrari and McLaren are equal at the top of the Australian Grand Prix victory roll, with ten victories apiece.

With just one race of the 2010 F1 season having taken place so far it is yet to emerge who are the favourites for the season ahead. Ferrari and Red Bull both impressed in Bahrain and should be in contention for victory once again. Lewis Hamilton finished third in Bahrain, but his new team-mate Jenson Button struggled in the other McLaren. The reigning Formula 1 World Champion will be aiming to finish higher up the order in Melbourne, where he won from pole last year driving for Brawn GP.

F1 legend Michael Schumacher makes his much heralded return to Grand Prix racing this season. The seven time Formula 1 champion finished sixth on his comeback for Mercedes, but showed strong race pace. His young team-mate Nico Rosberg finished one place ahead.

Force India also impressed in Bahrain, and could be points contenders at Albert Park. In contrast, Sauber were hugely disappointing after strong showings in pre-season testing. Renault’s Vitaly Petrov – the first ever Russian Formula 1 driver – settled in quickly before his car failed.

Lotus looked the best of the new Formula 1 teams, followed by Virgin and Hispania. It was a minor miracle that Hispania made it to Bahrain to compete. Karun Chandhok endured a difficult Formula 1 baptism, crashing out early on. Bruno Senna retired from the race in the other Hispania, but the team has plenty to be proud of.
